Summer is here and it is the time when many of us long to cool down in and near a body of water. Statistics South Africa, however, indicates that fatal drowning is the 5th leading cause of unintentional death in the country.
Drowning poses a serious threat to both children and adults and in many cases, can be avoided.
These shocking statistics coupled with the inaccessible swimming lessons for children who lived in Soweto, were the catalysts for these two Soweto born swimming school founders who believe that swimming is a fundamental life skill that promotes good health and can ultimately save lives.
Swim School Soweto
Swim School Soweto, a registered school based in Orlando East was founded by Tumi and has been in operation since November 7, 2020.
Parents with children as young as 2 years old, adults and senior citizens can expect to be taught by highly qualified and experienced black swimming coaches in a heated indoor 10x5m pool.
Tumi’s dream to launch the Soweto Swim school was prompted by the swim school that she had enrolled her children in back when she lived in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. When she returned to Soweto and saw how many children swam in dirty dams, she decided to act. She constructed a pool in her backyard that she has now dedicated for swimming lessons.
Lessons are 45 minutes each and start at R300 per month for children and R450 for adults.
Tumi and her team are thrilled to host you and your families in their safe, Covid-19 free school.

The Soweto Swimming Academy
The Soweto Swimming Academy can be found at the Pimville indoor pool. The first swimming lessons kicked off in February and are in full swing now in SA lockdown level 1.
The Soweto Swimming Academy is the brainchild of partners, Boitumelo Maepa and Sibusiso Xulu. When Boitumelo wanted his son to start swimming lessons he was disappointed to learn that the nearest swimming schools to him as a resident of Soweto were located in Mondeor, Roodepoort or Lenasia. It was then that he decided to start a swimming academy for Sowetans.
Sowetans in the Pimville and surrounding areas can expect to learn to swim in a clean heated pool.
Due to Covid-19 protocol only 4 people are allowed in the facility at a time.
Packages start at R450 for 4 lessons per month.
R850 for 8 lessons per month.
